At least 20 people were killed and 48 others injured in a twin suicide attack in northeastern Borno state late Saturday, police and a relief agency said Sunday afternoon.

The suicide attack -- carried out by two female bombers -- took place in the remote town of Shuwari Abachari in Damboa.

Twelve of the injured remain in "very critical condition”, Bashir Garga, regional coordinator for the government's relief body, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), told Anadolu Agency.

Police also confirmed the death and injury tolls.

A local vigilante official Busari Ahmadu put the death toll higher at 31.

The blasts came a day after Nigeria celebrated Eid-al-fitr marking the end of Muslim fasting month Ramadan.
