Two people were killed and another seriously injured in a knife attack in a suburb of Paris on Thursday, according to French officials.

The attack occurred in the center of Trappes, 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) west of Paris, early Thursday, where the attacker was also killed by police, said the Yvelines department.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb, at the scene in Trappes, said the attacker had psychological problems.

The victims were the mother and sister of the assailant, Collomb added.

The Versailles prosecutor's office launched an investigation into the incident, he said.

According to French media reports, Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement released by their propaganda wing Amaq.

The attacker -- born in 1982 -- entered a detached house on Camille Claudel Street in Trappes and left the house 20 minutes later with the knife, French radio Europe 1 reported.
