At least 8 people were injured as a vehicle ploughed into pedestrians in central Tokyo where people gathered for New Year festivities, local media reported on Tuesday.

According to Japanese Kyodo news agency, police sources say the incident was an act of terrorism.

“The police arrested Kazuhiro Kusakabe, 21, on suspicion of attempted murder,” the agency reported.

The minivan rammed into pedestrians shortly after midnight on Takeshita Street.

An injured teenage boy is in critical condition, the agency said, adding another person was slightly injured after Kusakabe allegedly hit him after getting out of the vehicle.

Kusakabe drove the rented vehicle from Osaka and police found a tank of kerosene in the vehicle.

Police arrested the suspect in a nearby park half an hour after the incident, the news agency reported.
